PM4K NEWS 043: CWG PRESIDENT FRUSTRATED BY DELAYS IN NEW DELHI

Continuing with the PM4K NEWS Series on the Commonwealth Games Project here’s another update.

NEW DELHI: Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennell has expressed frustration that two major venues for the 2010 games will miss construction deadlines. All venues for the games in New Delhi are supposed to be completed by March 31, but the games' co-ordination commission recently said the venues for athletics and swimming will not be ready until June.

Fennell said on Saturday that he had been assured the projects would be completed on time. He stressed that "there can be no further delays." The games that feature 71 nations and territories of the old British empire are scheduled for Oct. 3-14.

PM4K NEWS 042: RENOVATION WORK YET TO START IG STADIUM

NEW DELHI: Despite facing flak over delay in Commonwealth Games projects, Delhi Government is yet to start up-gradation and renovation work at Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex in the absence of an approval from a heritage panel. Officials of the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) have now sought the Delhi Urban Art Commission's (DUAC) approval to upgrade and renovate the sports venue at IP Estate in Central Delhi.

PM4K NEWS 041: CORRUPTION, COST ESCALATION IN COMMONWEALTH GAMES PROJECTS

Continuing with the PM4K NEWS Series on the Commonwealth Games Project here’s another update.

NEW DELHI: Alleging "massive corruption" in all infrastructure projects linked to the Commonwealth Games 2010, BJP today said Delhi Government has been spending huge sum of money "mindlessly" to speed up work on them as the mega event approaches. Alleging that the government was responsible for "inordinate delays" in implementation of various key projects, senior party leader V K Malhotra said huge cost escalation of work was only benefitting the builders.

"Massive corruption is taking place in all the projects being implemented by the Delhi Government. Now the Government is ready to spend any amount of money to ensure national prestige," Malhotra told reporters.

Asked whether he has any substantial proof to back his allegation, he said the Comptroller and Auditor General in its report has already found financial irregularities in implementation of various projects. "Cost of the projects has increased three-four times. Who is responsible for it? Is it not corruption?"

PM4K NEWS 040: INDIA WILL SPEND $2.26 BILLION ON 2010 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Continuing with the PM4K NEWS Series on the Commonwealth Games Project here’s another update.

NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday said that it will be spending Rs 10555 crore ($2.26 billion) for hosting the Commonwealth Games next year. The organizing committee of the Games will be generating revenue of around Rs. 1708 crore ($366 million approximately) from international and domestic broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing, licensed merchandise and donations. The information was given out by the minister of state for youth affairs and sports, Pratik Prakashbapu Patil, in the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

The minister said that recovery plans have been prepared for projects which are running behind their schedules. "It is expected that all the sports infrastructure projects will be completed in time before the Commonwealth Games, 2010," the minister added.

PORT OF SPAIN: Blending sports with climate change diplomacy, India on Saturday said it will hold the first-ever Green Commonwealth Games in 2010 and the best-ever sporting show and underlined that the event will propel New Delhi to a world-class city. Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the organizing committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, made the remarks at a ‘sports breakfast’ that the leaders and sports ministers of former British colonies attended.

PM4K NEWS 038: INDIA FULLY READY FOR 2010 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Continuing with the PM4K NEWS Series on the Commonwealth Games Project here’s another update.

NEW DELHI: India would spend around two billion U.S. dollars for successful completion of prestigious Commonwealth Games to be held at New Delhi in June 2010. Sindhushree Khular, the minister of youth assured the participating countries that increased budget would ensure best and green Commonwealth Games in India. Speaking at the second day of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHoGM) in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Khular said, "When we made the budget we thought there would be 10 functional areas. We now had to raise the number to 34."

India has earlier successfully hosted the Asian Games in 1982 but sports infrastructure needs to be significantly upgraded to meet the new sports standards for the CWG.

PM4K NEWS 037: DELHI RUNNING OUT OF TIME FOR 2010 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

NEW DELHI: A year from now, the eyes of the sporting world will be on India, as the country's capital prepares to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games Oct. 3-14.

With the one-year countdown officially on, there are serious concerns that Delhi won't be able to pull it off. "Two years before the Games, I had told the organizing committee that time was not your friend," Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell told reporters after an October meeting of representatives in Delhi. "And now, one year before it, I say, time is your enemy."

India has never hosted an event of this magnitude.

PROBLEMS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATIONS

Why the military services have trouble communicating.

General Joe Whigham is ordered by the Secretary of Defense to gather together a Navy Lieutenant and Captains from the Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force to discover why the services have trouble communicating with each other. He begins by saying that their first project task is to "secure" a certain building, and asks each of them to go home and prepare a list of steps for the project management plan and bring them to the meeting the next morning.

The Navy Lieutenant calls his Master Chief and says "Tell those swabs to:
-- Unplug the coffeepots
-- Turn off the computers
-- Turn out the lights
-- Lock the doors and leave the building unoccupied"

The Army Captain has his list in his notepad:
-- Assemble the company
-- Appoint guard mount and Sergeant of the Guard
-- Take control of all exits
-- Make sure no one gets into the building without a pass

The Marine Corps Captain writes down her steps on palm of her hand:
-- Assemble the platoon and supplies

-- Bring the building under mortar and SAW fire
