PM4K NEWS 073: UNIQUE ID TO AUTHENTICATE IDENTITIES ACROSS MULTIPLE SERVICES

Continuing with the PM4K NEWS Series on the Unique ID Project here’s another update.

While the Indian government spends an increasing amount of money towards public welfare, the actual benefits of such schemes seldom reach the intended population. Consider the popular National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). With fund allocation close to Rs 39,000 crore, NREGA has been affected by leakage of funds due to fake attendance. As more public welfare schemes are launched by the government,  India needs a way to identify individuals who are genuinely poor and deserve benefits. In this context, the Unique Identification project—where every Indian will be given a unique number—is of supreme importance.

To make sure that the system is foolproof, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will capture three key biometric characteristics of citizens. This includes the face, ten finger prints and iris scans of both eyes.

The first enrolment of the unique ID may take place between August 2010 and February 2011, Nilekani said.

PM4K NEWS 051: HOW NILEKANI WILL MAKE UNIQUE ID PROJECT PROFITABLE

Continuing with the PM4K NEWS Series on the  Unique ID Project here’s another update.

The ambitious unique ID project, headed by Nandan Nilekani, wants to ensure that every citizen of the country is provided with a unique id number. But how does it plan to make profits? CNBC-TV18 has managed to get a copy of the draft Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) document. The 41-page document largely has no surprises, reports CNBC-TV18's Sunanda Jayaseelan. That is because Nandan Nilekani had already detailed them in his various presentations over different periods of time. But the most interesting aspect is how does this project expect to make back the revenue, which has been outlined for this project.

It’s a two-fold step that this plant proposes. The first is it will generate revenues through charging for the services, which other beneficiaries will use and second is through enrolment fees.

On her first visit to India after becoming the CEO of Internet company Yahoo, Carol Bartz said she showed interest in India's Unique Identity (UID) project, reported MSN India. Headed by former Infosys CEO Nandan Nilekani, the project will assign every Indian citizen with a unique identification number that will identify him or her.

Bartz met India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Nilekani in New Delhi and is reported to have discussed the matter with him. "It was primarily a courtesy meeting where we also did inquire if Yahoo could be of any help in the area of cloud technologies. We are in the business of managing data. We process around 500 billion e-mails every month, so we wondered if we could assist in the area of managing the databases as India tries to implement the Unique Identity (UID) project," Bartz told the media in Delhi.

PM4K NEWS 028: NILEKANI THINKS UP WAY TO MAKE UNIQUE IDs PAY

Continuing with the PM4K NEWS Series on the Unique ID Project here’s another update.

In charge of one of India's most ambitious projects – providing a unique identification number to every citizen - Nandan Nilekani, chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, is thinking innovatively as usual. The former Infosys boss on Tuesday suggested a way in which the project could earn revenue for the government. ''Let's say there is a bank or a mobile company which is opening a new account. Normally they use a KYC (know your customer) process and spend about Rs. 100-200 crore. If we are able to reduce this cost (through the UID) then it's reasonable they pay us something for that. So we will monetise this for agencies that use it for commercial purpose,'' said Nilekani.

NEW DELHI: Establishing the identity of any person would be a cell phone call away once the ambitious Unique Identity Project (UIP) becomes operational, perhaps making it the first such initiative across the world. The UIP, which aims to build a database on details of every Indian resident, will provide authorities to cross-check identities of persons they are dealing with using a cell phone, Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) Chairman Nandan Nilekani said in New Delhi on Saturday. "If anybody wants to confirm the identity of a person, all he has to do is to take the thumbprint or fingerprint of the person on a cell phone and send it across to the central database and receive authentication within seconds," he said delivering the CSIR Foundation Day Lecture.
